Projects: St. Pattie's Day

I don't normally do a lot of crafting for St. Pattie's day. It just isn't big in our house. Never has been. But after I took down my Valentine's Day wreath (2 weeks ago) our front door felt a little naked. So I decided to make another wreath for it- who doesn't love wreaths?

So I bought some fabric and made another wire frame and went to town.
Here's my fabric, well tulle and stiff mesh actually. I bought 2 different shades of green in tulle and mesh. They're the same colors, so there the light greens match and the dark greens match. I didn't want it to be too busy. I cut the tulle and the mesh into strips that were about an inch and a half each then I just eyeballed it and cut the strips into smaller pieces. I ended up with lots of different sizes of pieces.

Then I started to tie the pieces onto my wreath form
I kept tying pieces on and squishing them together to make it really full:
After lots and lots of tying and squishing it was full and I was out of fabric- it took two full yards of fabric to make this!! Then I added a lime green ribbon left over from the wedding to hang it from.
While I was wasting time on Pinterest the other day I ran across this:

Pinned Image
I fell in love and I knew it would be the perfect addition to my Micky Mouse St Patrick's Day shirt. And I knew that I could make one. So I set out to Wal*Mart to see if they had 2 shades of green felt. (I had to go to Wal*Mart because we don't have a craft store here in our northern town. Boo.) They didn't. The only colors that you could just buy one sheet of were black, white, and red. So I had to buy a whole package of sheets of felt, thankfully there were 2 different colors of green in there, now I just have to figure out what to do with the rest of it...

Anyway here is how I made my headband (I didn't even read the directions that went with the pin, I just decided to wing it.)
First I got all of my supplies together. Green felt, hot glue gun, strechy headband (the hard ones hurt my head) scissors, black fabric to use as a backer, and glitter glue since Wal*Mart didn't have rhinestones.
I cut out my first shamrock in the light green.
Then I glued it to the darker green and cut that one out too- adding a stem.
I decided that I had cut too close to the light green the first time so I added another layer of dark green.
Then I glued it onto my headband
And added the black fabric as a backer so that I could catch the shamrock on anything and rip it off the headband.
Finally I added the glittle. At first I was just going to do a dab of it in the middle to look kind of like a rhinestone but then I didn't like how that looked so I spread the glitter out over the whole thing. I let it dry then added another layer of glitter so I was extra sparkely.
And now I'm wearing it!! Some of the church grandmas were here this morning to help with a project and they all thought it was the coolest thing. I felt pretty great about life and my crafting ability :)

Hope you're enjoying National Craft Month!

So What Wednesday

It's that time of week again!
Here's what I'm saying "So What" to:

*if I have lots some empty picture frames? And so what if I have picture frames that have had the same picture in them for like 5 years?

*if I'm not super happy with our wedding pictures? There, I said it. I don't 100% love them. And the Mr doesn't understand. All he sees is the fact that we spent $1,600 on them.

*if I always brush my teeth in the same order? I always start on the bottom left, then the bottom right, and so on.

*if I'm a bad wife and we didn't have dinner til 10 o'clock last night? And even then it was burgers at a bar and grill here in our northern town.

*if I've been really hurt this week by one of my friends and I don't know how to talk to her about it? I always do this, I hold my feelings in and don't say anything...
I don't know how to stand up for myself in most situations. I'm a people pleaser, I can't help it.

*if I can't decide weather or not to go back to Maurice's and buy these cute shoes they have? I keep hearing Sandra Bullock from the Blindeside in my head when I put them on, "You'll love it the most in the store." And I can't decide if I really love.

*if the "dress" that I'm wearing today came from the nightgown section of JCPenny's?

Projects: Kindle Cover and Leg Warmers

It's time for more projects since March in National Craft month!!
I have 2 to share with you today :)

The first is really a cheat, it isn't really a craft. I saw it on Pinterest and I copied it. I didn't even pin it. I "made" leg warmers. Kind of like these that Lindsay wore on The Pleated Poppy. I love her leg warmers/socks that she wears with her boots. Aren't they cute?
In her "What I Wore Wednesday" posts she says she got them at Target but I can never find them! It makes me sad. Then I saw this idea on Pinterest. I feel so bad that I don't have the pin (I can't find it again!!) other wise I would for sure share it with you and give credit where credit is due. Just please know that this was not an orignial idea.

It's the sleeve of an old sweater! How smart is that?? I bought the sweater at the 2nd hand store here in my northern town, cut the sleeves of and I'll be able to just the body of it for something else later.

And how cute do the look with my boots today? And bonus- they aren't as hot as thicker sweater like leg warmers would be and they don't make my feet hotter like socks would. I think I'm in love. And I think there will be many more leg warmers in my closet next year (I say next year cuz it's like 60 here today!)

Project #2: My kindle cover.
Quick back story. When I bought my Kindle I did not like any of the covers that Target had. When I had just been looking at the Kindle I liked at least 1 of the covers. It was pink and had flowers on it, super cute. But they day I got mine: no such luck, and I was not going to spend $30 on one that I didn't like.

So I decided I would make one.

I had cut up a sweater a few months ago to make a pillow for our couch but I didn't use all of the sweater. So I decided I would make a nice warm, cozy cover for my Kindle.

I got my supplies together
My Kindle (for size)
A softer fabric for a liner
The old sweater for the outside
Scissors
Thread

I sewed the inside liner, then the outside with the sweater, then I attached them together (sorry I don't have any pictures of this inbetween stuff), then I took the buttons that were on the front of the sweater and attached them to the top of the cover to keep it closed.

I actually just cut the whole piece of fabric that the buttons were on off the sweater and attached that piece to the top of the cover. Well then one of the buttons fell off because it was getting used a lot more than it was designed too. So I reattached both of them.

Now my Kindle has a warm, cozy, and stylish home :)

Visitors!

Sorry I didn't post on Friday or yesterday but my parents came to visit this weekend!! I love when they come visit. And they suprised me- they weren't suppose to be here until dinner time on Friday but they got here a little before 2 :)

It's so nice to just be able to hang out with them.

On Saturday the Mr and I took mom and dad to Grand Forks (mom had never been there!) and we took them to the Fighting Sioux hockey game. The Sioux beat Bemidji, but it was a good game.

Other than the game it was a pretty low key weekend. We hung out at our house, went to the hotel with mom and dad to go hot tubbing, they came to church with us, and cooked with mom (chicken breast, italian potatos, homemade butterfinger bars, tacos, spanish rice, shrimp cocktail, burgers on the grill).

I love them. I love when they come visit. But I hate trying to adjust to "normal" life after they leave.
I'm still working on it.

How was your weekend?

My planner

I am a planner. I plan things. I make lists. I like things to be organized.

But for some reason when it comes to blogging I usually don't have a topic in mind until I hit the "new post" button on my "dashboard". Well, I've decided it's time to chang that. I have a great day planner that I got at Target last fall. It has a page for each month, one where you can see the whole month and there are boxes for each day. But it also has weekly pages where you can see just Mon-Sun of that week and it gives you more space to write things for each day. I had been using just the monthly pages. Until I decided to do something about this blogging thing and never having ideas. So now on each day on the weekly pages, I've written a topic that I want to blog about or a project that I did that I want to share with you.

Then on Saturday I got really crazy.

I added meal planning to my planner too!

Blog posts in pink and meal ideas in green.

Then I made my shopping list and off to the store I went. What I didn't take into account was the fact that it's only the Mr and I at home. And most of the recipes I picked feed 6 adults. So I cooked on Saturday night (lasagna) and again on Monday night (turkey chili) and I haven't cooked since. We're living on left overs in this northern town.

And I'm sick of it. I am not a left over girl. I've never liked them. I can handle them once, then they better be gone.

So this planner thing may take some tweaking. But I think it'll be good for me and I'll blog more because of it.

Hope you're having a terrific Thursday!

So What Wednesday

So What if I took a couple of weeks off?
I'm back now and it's time to link up with Shannon at Life After I "Dew"!
Heres what I'm saying So What to this week:

*if I had to put a list of movies I already own into my iPhone? It gets really old to find a movie on sale and get really excited about it, buy it, then get home and find out you aleady own it. Happened to me twice. True story.

*if I really really really hate when people don't wash their hands in public bathrooms?

*if I sang Christmas songs in the shower last week?

*if it felt like Christmas to me on Monday because it was snowing and I made the cookies with the little reces cups in the middle?

*if the Mr clears his throat more than anyone else I know? And it drive me crazy.

*if I took my Valentine's day wreath off the front door last week and hung it in the front hallway instead? I just wasn't ready to put it away yet.

*if I changed our Valentine's day mantle last night so it's more St. Patrick's day-y and the Valentine's wreath is still in the front hallway?

*if my sister WON and iPAD2 at work yesterday and I got bit by the jealousy bug?

*if my sister flew to Vegas this morning and the jealousy bug is still following me around?

*if our high school boys hockey team is going to the state tournament today and I wish I could go? But I'm also kind of glad that I'm not, it's a lot of driving.

*if the church ladies make it super hard to watch your calories? They seriously bring goodies to church all the time and they're soooo good. Then during Lent they cook at church every Wednesday night! It's almost always yummie and I'm pretty sure they don't use the healthiest recipes.

What are you saying So What to this week?

National Craft Month!!

March is National Craft Month so this month I will be sharing different crafty projects with you! Some will be wearable crafts, some will be things that I made for my house, some things to make life easier, and some desserts (those count too right?).

Up first is my Anthropolgie inspired scarf.

I had my first visit to Anthro on our honeymoon in Santa Monica. I left empty handed. I picked up a book and carried it around for a while but in the end decided that I didn't need it (I do that a lot).
But then last week I had a conference in the twin cities for work and I went with my friend Kristina. On the way down we stopped at Trader Joe's, Anthro, and Sonic. What a day :) It was on this 2nd trip that I made my first Anthro purchase:
A shopping list for my fridge (check it out as you run out of it-so smart!), we registered for one of these at Target on our wedding registry and we didn't get it. Then I saw it at Anthro for less than it is at Target! What?! And a pretty blue dish for our bedroom to put my rings in when I shower. I could've bought one of the dishes in each color I loved them so much. I love the bigger ones too but I couldn't justify more cereal bowls.

Anyway, I also saw this scarf there:
I love this scarf! I tried it on, I checked myself out in the mirror. Pink is my color and I loved that it has a bunch of shades of pink and I love the sparkely dots. I love every thing about it. Except for the price tag.

$58.

For a scarf.

No way. Couldn't do it. Put it back on the hanger thingy and walked away from it. With a sad face.

Then on Wednesdsay, after the conference and on my way home I stopped at JoAnn fabrics. To browse, because we don't have one here where I live. I got fabric for 3 other projects then I saw this beautiful bright pink chiffon fabric with irredescent dots on it. For only $9.95 a yard! I thought to myself, I could make that Anthro scarf! So that's what I did yesterday.

I cut the fabric in half (down to 1/4 of a yard) then hand stitched two of the ends together to give it more length. And now, I have my own Anthro scarf that only cost $5 and 30 minutes of my time. Winner!
Please don't mind my lack of make-up in the picture on the left. I worked from home yesterday. And in the picture on the bottom right, it's folded in half, it's super long.

So there you have project #1 of National Craft Month! Whoop Whoop!
